Five people were killed when an employee opened fire on a bank in Louisville, Kentucky and live-streamed the attack on Instagram, police said.
The victims were between 40 and 64 years old. Among the other nine injured was a rookie police officer who had retired just two weeks ago.
The officer was shot in the head and is in critical condition after undergoing brain surgery.
The police reacted within three minutes and killed the attacker in an exchange of fire.
The shooting happened around 08:30 local time (12:30 GMT) in the former National Bank in the city center.
Caleb Goodlett told local media his wife, a bank teller, locked herself in the safe when the attack began.
Other witnesses described seeing a shootout between police officers and a sniper.
The victims have all been identified:
